Rama Devi Women's University is named after Maa Rama Devi as an humble tribute to the values and sacrifices she stood for.
Rama Devi Choudhury, adoringly called Maa (Mother) by the people of Orissa, was a celebrated freedom fighter and a social reformer. Born on the 3rd December, 1899 at Cuttack, she inherited a great legacy as the daughter of Gopal Ballav Das and the niece of Utkal Gaurab Madhusudan Das. At the tender age of 15, she married Gopabandhu Choudhury, then a Deputy Collector and later a freedom fighter.

History of the University


Rama Devi Womens’ University , acclaimed as the “First Women’s University of the state of Odisha” has its inception as a University on 30th May, 2015,after the erstwhile Rama Devi Womens’Autonomous  College was upgraded to a University. Already recognized as one of the premier Institutes in the education map of Odisha since 1964, it underway in the name of Government Women’s College and subsequently carried on its mission on propagation of education in the state named  as “ Rama Devi Women’s College” since 1969  in the name of   Maa Rama Devi ,the brave freedom fighter of the nation and ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi. In its pursuit to excellence the institute flourished by leaps and bounds. It achieved the status of Lead College of the state by Govt. of Odisha in 1994.
